Nairobi, Kenya – Convicted murderer Joseph Kuria Irungu, popularly known as Jowie, remains on death row, and claims that he has received a presidential pardon are entirely unfounded, according to his legal team.
“There is no Power of Mercy application, no pardon has been granted, and we are not seeking one,”
— Andrew Muge, Defence Lawyer
Still Behind Bars at Kamiti
Jowie, who was sentenced to death on March 13, 2024, for the 2018 murder of businesswoman Monica Kimani, is currently held at Kamiti Maximum Security Prison.
Lady Justice Grace Nzioka, in her ruling, described the murder as cold, calculated, and deliberate. Key evidence included:
- CCTV footage placing Jowie at Monica’s residence,
- His use of a stolen national ID to access the apartment,
- Possession of a borrowed firearm under false pretenses.
The court ruled that the murder was not only planned but followed by deliberate attempts to cover up the crime.

Appeal Delayed by Judicial Bureaucracy
Following the conviction, Jowie filed a formal notice of appeal, contesting both the guilty verdict and the sentence. However, the appeal has yet to progress due to delays at the criminal registry, which is tasked with compiling and forwarding case records to the appellate court.
Mr. Muge cited internal judicial inefficiencies as the cause of the delay. “Criminal appeals rely solely on the court’s timeline. Unlike civil matters, we can’t fast-track this,” he said.
Focus Remains on Legal Process—Not Presidential Pardon
Despite increasing public speculation, Muge reaffirmed that Jowie’s legal team is not seeking executive clemency. “We are committed to a judicial resolution. Our confidence lies in the appeal process—not in a political solution,” he stated.
He expressed cautious optimism, citing recent indications of progress within the registry. Still, no official court date has been set for the appeal.
The Bottom Line:
Jowie’s legal battle continues in court, not at State House. Despite public interest and online chatter, no mercy has been granted—and none is on the table
