SHOCK RAID: Police Seize 1,300 Litres of Deadly Chang’aa in Kisii as Prime Suspect Escapes

In a major crackdown on illicit alcohol, a joint operation involving police officers from Magena Police Station and National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) stormed a homestead in Riokari Village, Magena Sub-Location, recovering a staggering 1,300 litres of chang’aa along with brewing apparatus.

The Thursday morning raid, hailed as a success by local authorities, dealt a significant blow to the shadowy trade that has plagued the region for years. The suspect, believed to be the owner of the illegal brewing den, managed to escape moments before the swoop. Authorities have launched a manhunt and vowed to bring him to justice.

“We are committed to dismantling these illegal operations that continue to endanger the health and well-being of our people,” said Magena Police Station OCS, Inspector David Onsongo. “The amount of chang’aa seized is a clear indication that this was a well-established outfit. We will not relent.”

Local residents, some of whom had silently borne the brunt of the criminal operation, praised the action. “This place has been a ticking time bomb. We’ve seen lives ruined and families torn apart by this brew,” said Mary Kerubo, a Riokari resident and mother of three. “We hope this is the beginning of real change.”

The National Police Service has reiterated its warning to individuals engaging in the production and distribution of illicit alcohol, citing serious health risks and safety concerns. The brew, often made under unhygienic conditions, has been linked to poisoning, blindness, and even death in various parts of the country.

“Let this serve as a clear message—there is no hiding place for those defying the law,” said Kisii County Commissioner Richard Maroa.

“We will continue working with law enforcement and community leaders to ensure Kisii remains safe and free from the grip of illicit alcohol.”

NGAO officers involved in the operation emphasized that community cooperation is critical.

“The public must speak out,” said Assistant County Commissioner Beatrice Nyambeki. “Your tip-offs and vigilance are our most effective weapons against this menace.”

The seized chang’aa has been secured as evidence and will be destroyed following due process, according to police. Meanwhile, the hunt for the suspect continues, with authorities urging anyone with information to report to the nearest police station in confidence.
