Ruto’s ID Directive Sparks Rift: Natembeya Under Fire, Ruweida Demands DCI Probe

Lamu East MP Ruweida Mohamed has called for the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to investigate Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya over remarks opposing President William Ruto’s directive to ease the issuance of national identity cards (IDs) across the country, including Northern Kenya.

Background on Ruto’s ID Directive

President William Ruto recently ordered the scrapping of extra vetting procedures for citizens seeking national IDs, particularly in regions like North Eastern Kenya. The Head of State emphasized that access to identification is a constitutional right, not a privilege, and that outdated security vetting had denied many Kenyan youth their legal documents.

“All Kenyans must be treated equally. There will be no extra vetting. Getting an ID should be simple and dignified,” Ruto stated during a recent address.

Natemebya’s Opposition and Political Fallout

Governor George Natembeya opposed the directive, citing concerns about national security. His stance has now attracted political backlash, with Ruweida Mohamed accusing him of undermining youth rights and defying presidential authority.

“Opposing the President’s order is not just political defiance — it’s an act of suppressing youth trying to secure a future,” Ruweida told residents during a public gathering in Faza, Lamu East. She said the move by the President was a relief for marginalized communities, and any leader blocking such efforts should face investigation.

Local Support and Youth Mobilization

Ruweida’s remarks were met with approval from residents, who praised her for development milestones in Lamu East that previous MPs had failed to deliver. Community members called on local youth to engage in politics and vote for development-minded leaders in future elections.

Education and Bursary Update

On education, Mr. Bwanadi Shee, chairman of the NG-CDF Committee in Lamu East, confirmed that bursaries for secondary school students have already been disbursed.

“The allocation has reached the students. We are ensuring that every deserving learner continues with their education uninterrupted,” Shee stated.
