Southern Bypass closed after fuel tanker fire sparks major emergency response

Sections of the Southern Bypass have been closed after a fuel tanker was engulfed by fire, triggering a major emergency operation and causing severe traffic disruption.

The incident occurred on Saturday, 24 January 2026, along the busy highway, which serves as a key link between Nairobi’s eastern and western transport corridors.

Thick black smoke rose high into the air and could be seen from several kilometres away, prompting panic among motorists and nearby residents.

Police and firefighters moved swiftly to secure the area, citing the danger posed by the tanker’s flammable cargo. Drivers were ordered to leave the affected section of the road as officers diverted traffic to alternative routes.

Authorities say the fire broke out following a road accident involving the tanker, though the exact cause has not yet been established.

Emergency teams remained at the scene for several hours to prevent the flames from spreading to nearby vehicles, structures or vegetation.

Medical personnel were placed on standby as rescue teams assessed the scene. By the time of publication, there was no confirmed information on injuries or fatalities, with officials saying verification was still ongoing.

Government agencies have launched investigations to determine what led to the fire, including whether mechanical failure, human error or road conditions played a role. Police have urged motorists to avoid the Southern Bypass and follow traffic advisories as cleanup and safety assessments continue.

The incident has renewed concerns over the transportation of fuel and other hazardous materials on major highways, particularly in densely populated areas.
Traffic updates and official statements are expected later.
