The 2027 Bungoma gubernatorial race has taken a dramatic turn. Westlands MP Tim Wanyonyi, a national figure with a reputation for calm leadership and inclusive governance, has declared his candidacy, instantly shifting the county’s political narrative.
What makes his entry more intriguing isn’t just his record — but his bloodline.
Wanyonyi is the younger brother of National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Ford-Kenya party boss and Western Kenya’s undisputed political kingmaker.
That relationship is now at the center of Bungoma’s biggest political dilemma: Will Wetang’ula endorse his brother — or his loyal foot soldier, Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa?

“Time to Bring My Vision Home,” Says Wanyonyi
Wanyonyi made his announcement during a high-energy rally in Kanduyi, where supporters chanted his name and called for change.
“Bungoma deserves focused, honest, and inclusive leadership. I’ve served Nairobi diligently — now it’s time to serve my people at home,” he told the crowd.

He pledged to bring his development blueprint from Nairobi to Bungoma, focusing on equity, service delivery, and fiscal discipline.
Tim Wanyonyi: A Calm, Competent Alternative
The three-term Westlands MP is known nationally for his results-driven leadership, his advocacy for persons with disabilities, and his transparency with public funds.
Key Achievements:
- Over 10,000 bursaries issued annually to vulnerable students through a structured scholarship system.
- Upgraded infrastructure across Kangemi, Kileleshwa, and Mountain View.
- PLWD empowerment: Distributed mobility devices, championed inclusive hiring, and launched training hubs.
- Improved healthcare access through mobile clinics and dispensary upgrades.
- Transparent CDF use, earning accolades from the NG-CDF board and civil society groups.
His supporters believe this Nairobi-tested model could bring a new era of accountability and delivery to Bungoma.

Didmus Barasa: Firebrand With Local Roots
Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa, a second-term lawmaker, is already deep in campaign mode. Known for his aggressive political style and unwavering loyalty to President Ruto, Barasa has vowed to dismantle county-level corruption and boost youth development.
Notable Achievements:
- Built 70+ modern classrooms across Kimilili constituency.
- Expanded rural roads in Kibingei, Kamukuywa, and Maeni.
- Street lighting and improved local policing boosted security.
- Funded youth Saccos and skills training for local entrepreneurs.
“I don’t promise. I act. Bungoma needs a doer, not a talker,” Barasa said at a recent rally in Chwele.
Barasa is expected to run under the UDA ticket, potentially putting him at odds with Wetang’ula if Ford-Kenya fields Wanyonyi.

Zachariah Barasa: The Disruptive Businessman
Also in the race is Zachariah Barasa, a businessman and 2022 gubernatorial aspirant who has branded himself the anti-establishment candidate.
He has criticized Governor Lusaka’s administration for “mismanagement and stalled promises.”
Campaign Pillars:
- Anti-corruption audits and real-time project tracking.
- Digital revenue systems to curb graft.
- Public-private investments in agriculture and ECDEs.
- Widespread grassroots support, especially among boda boda riders, market traders, and professionals.
“Bungoma isn’t for the privileged — it’s for the people. We need to run it with discipline, not politics,” he told The Daily Whistle.
Wangamati’s Legacy Still Looms
Though not in the current race, former Governor Wycliffe Wangamati’s influence remains. His five-year term (2017–2022) was defined by major service delivery initiatives, many of which are still referenced in campaign speeches.
Legacy Highlights:
- Ksh 400M bursary program that benefited over 60,000 students across all 45 wards.
- Streetlight installation that revitalized small towns at night.
- Clean water projects: Boreholes and piped systems in Mt. Elgon and Webuye.
- Over 500km of road upgrades, opening access to markets in rural zones.
His development-first model still earns him admiration, especially in Tongaren, Kabuchai, and parts of Sirisia.

The Wetang’ula Factor: Choose Family or Faithful?
All eyes are now on Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, whose endorsement could tilt the entire Bungoma equation.
Barasa has long been seen as Wetang’ula’s political heir. But Wanyonyi is his own blood — and his entry places the Speaker in a tight spot. Supporting his brother could signal dynasty politics. Sticking with Barasa might fracture family trust.

“Wetang’ula’s silence is the loudest sound in Bungoma politics right now,” said political analyst Mildred Mukhwana. “His decision will reveal whether Ford-Kenya is a family affair or a movement.”
On the Ground: Mixed Feelings About Tim’s Homecoming
The public is split on Wanyonyi’s return:
“He’s shown us what good leadership looks like in Nairobi. Let him come and clean up Bungoma too,” says Rose Naliaka, a school head in Webuye.
But not everyone is convinced:
“He left Bungoma years ago. Now he wants us to give him power? We need someone who knows our struggles daily,” argues Kevin Wekesa, a boda boda rider in Bumula.
2027: Defining Bungoma’s Future
With Governor Lusaka constitutionally barred from a third term, Bungoma stands at a crossroads. Voters must now choose between the four candidates
