Leaders Push for Single Spokesperson to Champion the Luhya Community
A political storm is brewing in Western Kenya as prominent leaders rally behind a plan to unite the Luhya community ahead of the 2027 general elections.
A high-profile consultative meeting is being planned to bring together key national figures from the region—National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi, Cooperatives and MSME Cabinet Secretary Wycliffe Oparanya, and DAP-K Party Leader Eugene Wamalwa.

The objective of this landmark meeting is to select a single spokesperson for the Luhya nation, consolidate political power, and ensure the region speaks in one powerful voice going into the next election.
While addressing large gatherings in Khwisero and Matungu constituencies, the leaders made passionate appeals for political unity. They cited the Luhya community’s large and consistent voter turnout, which has historically been used by other political formations but rarely rewarded with meaningful representation.

Speaker Wetang’ula, flanked by Oparanya and other leaders, declared that the era of the Luhya being a “supporting cast” in Kenya’s politics is over. “We are tired of being politically courted but left out of key national decisions. This time we will sit at the table as equal partners,” Wetang’ula said.
The proposed meeting will aim to solidify the region’s strategy, identify a unifying political figure, and establish a coordinated front to influence national leadership decisions.

According to political analysts, the Luhya community, spread across Kakamega, Bungoma, Busia, Vihiga, and parts of Trans Nzoia and Nairobi, represents one of the largest ethnic voting blocs in the country.
However, internal divisions and competition among leaders have often prevented the community from leveraging this strength. The leaders emphasized that a single spokesperson will allow the region to negotiate effectively and avoid being exploited for political gain.

Ojwang’ Death Sparks Outrage Amid Calls for Police Accountability
As the unity message gathered momentum, the tone turned somber when some leaders addressed the death of teacher Albert Ojwang’, whose body was recently found under unclear circumstances.
Senator Godfrey Osotsi, ODM’s Deputy Party Leader, demanded the resignation of Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat, blaming the police for failing to protect Ojwang’ and calling for a full investigation. Ojwang’, who was a teacher at Kibra Secondary School, was allegedly arrested by police officers on suspicion of theft and later died in custody.

His body was discovered at the City Mortuary days after he was reported missing, prompting widespread condemnation from human rights groups and education stakeholders.
According to reports, Ojwang’ was last seen in the custody of police officers attached to the Nairobi Regional Headquarters. His family says they were kept in the dark about his whereabouts and only discovered his death after days of searching.
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has also joined in demanding justice, describing Ojwang’s death as “a tragic example of police impunity.” Investigations into the case are ongoing, but civil society groups are urging the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to take up the matter urgently and deliver accountability.

A New Political Chapter or Familiar Rhetoric?
The renewed push for Luhya unity comes at a critical time in Kenya’s political cycle. With the 2027 elections just two years away, regions and communities are already positioning themselves for coalition-building and resource negotiation.
Whether this initiative marks a true turning point or simply another wave of political posturing remains to be seen. Still, the involvement of key national leaders signals that Western Kenya is serious about redefining its role on the national stage.

Political observers say that a united Western Kenya would not only reshape succession politics but could also influence policy priorities in the next administration.
If the planned consultative meeting results in a consensus on leadership, it could elevate the Luhya community into a kingmaker role—one that commands attention, respect, and real benefits for its people.
