Huge Fire Breaks Out at Mtindwa Market in Nairobi’s Umoja Area

A major fire has broken out at Mtindwa Market in Umoja, eastern Nairobi, sending thick plumes of smoke into the sky and prompting an urgent response from emergency services.

Firefighters were deployed to the scene on Saturday morning and were working to contain the blaze amid fears it could spread to nearby residential and commercial buildings.

Witnesses said the fire spread rapidly through parts of the market, forcing traders and residents to flee the area.

Images and videos shared on social media showed heavy smoke billowing above the market as emergency crews battled the inferno.

Mtindwa Market is a key trading hub in Umoja, serving hundreds of small-scale traders and residents in the surrounding estates. Fires in Nairobi markets have in the past caused significant losses, often destroying goods worth millions of shillings.

The cause of the fire has not yet been established, and authorities have not issued an official statement on what may have triggered the incident.

It remains unclear how much damage has been caused or whether there were any injuries or fatalities. Police and emergency officials have urged residents to stay away from the area to allow rescue and containment operations to continue.
