The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has renewed calls for road users to prioritise safety following a series of fatal accidents across Kenya.
At least five people are feared dead after a crash at Kikopey, Gilgil, along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.
The accident involved a Great Rift 14-seater matatu and a trailer, reportedly caused by brake failure on the truck.
Eyewitnesses described the collision as catastrophic, with the matatu severely damaged and multiple casualties feared.

This comes less than 24 hours after a multi-vehicle accident along Mombasa Road at Konza City in Machakos County, which left eight people dead.
The crash involved a shuttle headed to Loitoktok, a lorry, and a Tahmeed bus travelling from Mombasa. Authorities confirmed all fatalities were passengers aboard the shuttle.
In a separate incident, a Janam bus was involved in a serious accident at Miesenyi, Voi, along the Nairobi–Mombasa Highway, leaving several passengers critically injured.
NTSA officials say the recent accidents highlight the urgent need for stricter adherence to traffic regulations. Drivers are urged to obey speed limits, wear seatbelts, avoid using mobile phones while driving, and ensure vehicles are properly maintained.
Pedestrians and motorcyclists are also reminded to stay vigilant.
“Every road user has a role to play. Following traffic rules and using safety gear can save countless lives,” said an NTSA spokesperson.
The authority has intensified road safety campaigns, increased enforcement through random roadblocks, and continues collaborating with police and local communities to educate the public on safe driving.
In 2025, Kenya recorded over 3,500 road fatalities, with speeding, reckless driving, and brake failure among the main causes. NTSA urges all road users to stay alert, particularly on highways, to prevent further tragedies.
