The Kenya Diaspora Impact Platform (KDIP) was presented during Ruto’s engagement with Kenyans in New York on Sunday, September 20, as the Government seeks to expand the role of the diaspora beyond sending money home.
The platform is being developed through a partnership involving the Government of Kenya, the United Nations in Kenya and Equity Group Holdings, following the signing of a Joint Declaration of Intent witnessed by President Ruto.
What the Kenya Diaspora Impact Platform will offer
According to the President, the platform is intended to create a structured connection between Kenyans abroad and opportunities available in the country.
Ruto said the initiative will facilitate participation in community impact projects, financing for micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), enterprise creation, and skills and knowledge transfer.
“This platform we have unveiled today has been developed to elevate the diaspora role in community projects, financing MSMEs, creating enterprises and transferring skills and knowledge while connecting Kenyans abroad to opportunities that meaningfully contribute to national transformation,” Ruto said.
The platform is also expected to provide information on what the Government describes as verifiable opportunities, allowing Kenyans abroad to identify areas where they can invest or contribute their expertise.
Ruto said the initiative would make it easier for Kenyans living abroad to participate in the country's development without limiting their contribution to remittances.
“Our diaspora is a vital part of Kenya’s growth story, not only through remittances, but through investment, expertise, innovation and global networks,” he said.
Housing, health and agriculture among targeted sectors
Ruto pointed to several sectors where Kenyans in the diaspora could participate in investment opportunities.
Among them are housing, healthcare and agriculture, areas the President said could benefit from diaspora capital and expertise.
The platform is also expected to support enterprise creation and MSMEs, potentially providing a channel through which diaspora resources can be directed towards businesses and community projects in Kenya.
The President said the Government wants Kenyans abroad to be able to convert their assets and enterprises into long-term wealth.
“We want to make it easier for those in the diaspora to convert assets and enterprises into long-term wealth,” Ruto said.
Government, UN and Equity Group partnership
The launch of KDIP coincided with the signing of a Joint Declaration of Intent involving the Government of Kenya, the United Nations and Equity Group Holdings.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi signed on behalf of the Government, while Equity Group Holdings CEO James Mwangi represented the private sector and UN Resident Coordinator in Kenya Garry Conille signed on behalf of the United Nations.
The partnership places the private sector, government and international development system around an initiative intended to strengthen diaspora participation in Kenya's economy and development.
Ruto puts trust and transparency at the centre
Ruto said the success of the platform would depend heavily on the availability of reliable information and transparency.
The President said Kenyans abroad need confidence that opportunities presented through the platform can be verified before committing their resources.
“Trust must be at the centre for this initiative to succeed. Information must be reliable and transparency should be the operating principle if the platform has to achieve its objectives,” he said.
The emphasis on verification is significant because the platform is intended to connect diaspora investors with opportunities at home.
Ruto said the Government was seeking to build a stronger relationship between Kenyans abroad and opportunities in Kenya based on measurable results.
“We are building a stronger bridge between Kenyans abroad and opportunities at home, founded on trust, transparency and measurable results,” he said.
Diaspora engagement takes centre stage in New York
The launch formed part of Ruto’s wider engagement with Kenyans living in the United States ahead of the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.
The presidential diaspora engagement was held at Convene in Hudson Yards and was organised by the Kenyan Embassy in Washington, DC, in partnership with the State Department for Diaspora Affairs.
The Kenya Diaspora Impact Platform had been announced ahead of the meeting, with the Government describing it as a mechanism for deepening engagement between Kenya and its citizens abroad.
With its focus on investment, MSMEs, enterprise development, community projects and knowledge transfer, KDIP is now positioned as part of the Government's broader effort to create structured channels for diaspora participation in Kenya's economic development.
