The former Mr. Elgon Member of Parliament John Serut has died. Confirming his death, his Daughter Mitchell Serut announced that her father had passed away on Wednesday. Serut passed away at a Nairobi hospital where he was being treated for cancer. Serut had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma in January of 2020.
In October 2021, the family took it to Twitter to appeal for financial support from Kenyans. “Hey guys, so a lot of you don’t know me, but I’m here requesting your help today. My father’s name is John Serut, and he’s been unwell for a while now. He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in January 2020. Since then, we’ve had medical bills totaling to about 20 million,’ Michelle wrote.
Serut had served as Mr. Elgon’s Member of Parliament for terms from 2002 to 2007, but he lost to Fred Kapondi in the 2013 election. He was then elected for another term as an independent candidate. In his condolence message, the deputy president William Ruto described Serut as a gifted debater, persistent, and a fighter for equal justice.
“Mheshimiwa John Serut was a firm, bold and vocal politician who served the people of Mt Elgon with distinction. We honor the rich legacy that he leaves behind,” Dp Ruto said.
