“The disastrous crash at Mtito Andei today, which has robbed our nation 22 lives, is a painful ordeal for all of us as the people of Kenya,” Gachagua said.

Gachagua also offered prayers for the victims, asking God to grant eternal rest to those who died in the collision.

“May the Almighty God grant eternal rest to our dear Kenyans who have lost their lives,” he said.

The accident occurred at around 7am in the Kanga area, past Mtito Andei, when a passenger bus collided head-on with a lorry travelling in the opposite direction.

The bus was reportedly carrying passengers returning from a funeral when the crash occurred.

Initial reports put the death toll at 20, but subsequent reports indicated that two more victims had succumbed to their injuries, bringing the reported number of fatalities to 22.

Several other passengers were injured and taken to hospital for treatment. The circumstances surrounding the collision had not been fully established in the reports available at the time of publication. <Cite refs={["turn115672news9","turn115672search3","turn115672search5"]}/>

Gachagua Warns Motorists Ahead of Christmas

Gachagua used his condolence message to urge motorists and other road users to exercise caution as the Christmas festivities approach.

He noted that many families would soon be travelling to their rural homes and other destinations to celebrate the holidays, calling for extra vigilance as the rainy season continues.

“As the Christmas festivities draw near and our children prepare to travel home for the holidays, I urge all road users to exercise caution, especially as the rainy season continues,” he said.

His warning comes as concerns grow over road safety along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, one of Kenya's major transport corridors.

The latest crash occurred less than a month after another fatal accident along the same highway claimed 17 lives, renewing questions about the safety of motorists and passengers using the busy route. <Cite refs={["turn115672news9","turn115672search2"]}/>

Gachagua Calls on Authorities to Improve Road Safety

The former Deputy President also called on authorities responsible for road safety to take measures to protect Kenyans travelling on highways across the country.

“I also urge authorities charged with safety responsibility on our roads to ensure Kenyans are safe on our roads and highways,” he said.

Gachagua stressed that negligence and reckless behaviour should not result in the loss of innocent lives.

“No Kenyan, no human being deserves to lose a life out of negligence and recklessness,” he added.

His remarks place renewed emphasis on the responsibility of both road users and safety agencies to help prevent further tragedies, particularly during periods when travel increases.

As investigations into the Mtito Andei crash continue, the final circumstances that led to the collision remain a key issue for authorities to establish.
