President William Ruto has announced that German giants Bayern Munich will face Dutch club Ajax in a historic football match scheduled for January 5, 2027, at Nairobi's Talanta Sports City, also known as Raila Odinga International Stadium.

The match, announced on October 28, is expected to mark the official opening of the new stadium, which has a planned seating capacity of 60,000. It will also be a major milestone for Kenya as the country prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

According to the announcement, the two European clubs were selected because of their remarkable records in continental football. Bayern Munich have won the UEFA Champions League six times, while Ajax have lifted the trophy four times, giving them a combined total of 10 European titles.

Ruto also highlighted the symbolism behind the fixture, linking the German club to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, whose name the stadium bears, and drawing a connection between the meaning of Talanta, or talent, and Ajax's reputation for developing young footballers.

The president's message presented the encounter as a meeting between talent and the future, bringing two historic European clubs to Kenya for a landmark sporting occasion.

The stadium is one of Kenya's major investments in sports infrastructure. Designed as a modern football venue, it is expected to feature advanced match technology, including Video Assistant Referee (VAR) systems and goal-line technology, alongside luxury hospitality facilities.

The project's reported cost has risen from an initial estimate of KSh35 billion to approximately KSh45.8 billion, making it one of the country's most significant sports infrastructure projects.

The Bayern Munich-Ajax fixture is also expected to provide an important test of the stadium's readiness ahead of AFCON 2027, scheduled to run from June 19 to July 17, 2027.

For Kenyan football fans, the match would offer a rare opportunity to watch two of Europe's most decorated clubs compete on home soil. It would also mark Bayern Munich's first appearance in Kenya if the fixture proceeds as announced.

Ticket sales have been announced for November 5, 2026, through the stated Talanta Sports City ticketing platform. Fans should confirm the official ticketing arrangements through the clubs or the relevant event organisers before making payments.
