The Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has officially postponed the much-anticipated Mashemeji Derby between Gor Mahia FC and AFC Leopards SC, citing the unavailability of suitable venues due to preparations for the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2025.
Originally scheduled for Sunday, May 11, 2025, the high-stakes FKF Premier League clash will now be played at a later date to be announced.
“The Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani — which had been earmarked to host the match — is currently undergoing final preparations for CHAN and is unavailable for domestic fixtures,” said FKF CEO Barry Otieno in a statement released Friday.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF), which designated Kasarani as a key CHAN competition venue, had advised that the derby be relocated to the Ulinzi Sports Complex and played behind closed doors. This was intended to preserve the stadium’s infrastructure and uphold strict security protocols ahead of the continental tournament.

However, the Ulinzi Sports Complex declined to host the match, citing internal safety concerns and the potential risk of vandalism.
“This was a difficult but necessary decision,” said FKF President Nick Mwendwa. “We understand the emotional and cultural importance of the Mashemeji Derby, but we must prioritize safety, venue integrity, and CAF commitments.”
FKF convened a high-level meeting on Friday morning with officials from both Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards to explain the situation and explore possible alternatives.
“We are disappointed but understand the federation’s position,” said Gor Mahia Secretary-General Sam Ochola. “It’s better to have a derby in the right environment than to risk chaos or injury.”
“This is Kenya’s biggest fixture. It deserves a proper venue, and we support FKF in finding a viable alternative,” added AFC Leopards Chairman Dan Shikanda.
The Mashemeji Derby remains one of the most iconic rivalries in East African football, attracting tens of thousands of fans and intense media coverage each season. Its postponement marks a significant moment in the domestic football calendar, particularly as Kenya prepares to host CHAN for the first time.
FKF has assured fans, clubs, and stakeholders that a new date for the fixture will be announced in due course.
“We call on supporters to remain patient. The Mashemeji Derby will return stronger, under conditions that honor the passion and pride it commands,” said Mwendwa.
