Detectives in Naivasha have uncovered a horrifying domestic crime that has shaken the Karai community, following the arrest of 30-year-old nanny Mary Chebet, who confessed to the brutal murder of her employer, Jane Wambui Njoroge, a nurse at Naivasha Sub-County Hospital.
The chilling discovery followed a missing person report filed by the victim’s husband on July 4, 2025, after Jane failed to return home from work.

“We had reason to believe that someone close to the victim knew more than they were saying. That led us to the house help, who cracked under questioning,” said a senior DCI officer involved in the investigation.
Chebet eventually led investigators to the family’s home in Karai, where she pointed to a shallow grave behind the house. Public health officers were called in to assist in exhuming the decomposing body, which had cloth tightly wrapped around the neck — a clear sign of foul play.

“We were met with a heartbreaking scene. This was a cold, calculated killing. No human being deserves to die like that,” said Naivasha Sub-County Police Commander Stephen Kirui.
Gruesome Discovery and Investigation
Initial investigations suggest a possible domestic dispute as the motive, though detectives have not ruled out other possibilities, including financial disagreements.
“Jane was a hardworking nurse who dedicated her life to helping others. That her life was ended in such a horrific manner, and in her own home, is devastating,” said Dr. Anne Wanjiku, a colleague from Naivasha Sub-County Hospital.
The suspect, Mary Chebet, is now in custody at Naivasha Police Station and is expected to be arraigned later this week. Authorities say investigations are almost complete and a murder charge will be filed imminently.

“We urge families to conduct background checks on domestic staff and remain vigilant. This tragedy must not be repeated,” warned DCI Rift Valley Regional Head Joseph Muli.
Community in Mourning
The Karai neighbourhood is in mourning, with dozens of residents holding a candlelight vigil for the late nurse. Community members expressed disbelief that a caregiver entrusted with household duties could turn into a killer.
This case has also sparked fresh debate around domestic worker vetting, household security, and mental health awareness within homes.
