The National Police Service (NPS) has announced a major breakthrough in the murder investigation of Hon. Charles Ong’ondo Were, confirming the arrest of four key suspects positively identified at the scene of the crime.
Hon. Were was fatally shot in an attack that stunned the nation, igniting public outcry and demands for swift justice. Now, the NPS says it has gathered critical evidence linking the suspects directly to the assassination.

“This is not just a breakthrough — it is a firm step toward justice for the late Hon. Were and the people he served,” said Muchiri Nyaga, NPS Spokesperson and Director of Corporate Communication.

Gang Connection and Recovered Evidence
Some of the suspects are members of the notorious criminal group Mjahidin, which has been linked to a series of armed robberies in Nairobi’s Eastlands. Police believe this connection could reveal more about the planning and motive behind the killing.
“We are following multiple leads, including political, criminal, and personal angles,” said a senior investigator. “The motive will become clearer as we complete forensic and digital analysis.”
In addition to the arrests, officers recovered key physical and digital evidence expected to strengthen the prosecution’s case.
Public Urged to Remain Calm, Avoid Speculation
With emotions running high, NPS has urged the public, leaders, and media to refrain from speculation or spreading unverified information that could compromise the investigation.
The police emphasized their commitment to transparency and fairness, promising regular updates as the investigation continues.
Leaders and Citizens Demand Accountability
Hon. Were’s death has triggered widespread mourning and calls for accountability. Lawmakers and civil society have urged the government to treat the case with urgency and clarity.
“Charles was a servant of the people — a man of principle,” said Hon. Lilian Chebet, a colleague in Parliament. “We demand transparency, speed, and justice — nothing less.”
Public Help Needed in Ongoing Investigation
NPS is appealing to anyone with information that could assist the investigation to report it via the following toll-free numbers:
“No piece of information is too small. One call could unlock the truth,” said Nyaga.
Moving Forward
As investigations intensify, the NPS has reaffirmed its dedication to uncovering the truth and delivering justice
