Yesterday, September 13, 2026 was supposed to be a big day at State House Nairobi. The day marked exactly four years since September 13, 2022, when William Samoei Ruto was sworn in as Kenya's 5th President at Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani in front of 60,000 Kenyans and 20 Heads of State at 2:43pm.

But there was no cake. No celebration. No thanksgiving. No military parade. No address to the nation. State House was completely silent.

The reason? A brutal new national poll that has embarrassed the presidency.

THE POLL THAT KILLED THE PARTY

On Wednesday September 9, 2026, Trends and Insights for Africa (TIFA) released its second release from its June 2026 national poll that has shocked State House.

According to People Daily, a reputable national newspaper, 66 per cent of Kenyans say their personal or household economic situation has deteriorated since the 2022 general election, while only 12 per cent report an improvement.

According to Nation Africa, Kenya's largest media house, dissatisfaction has risen to 76 percent who say Kenya is moving in wrong direction, only 14 percent say right direction.

People Daily confirms the survey was conducted through face-to-face household interviews with 2,048 randomly selected adults across all 47 counties between June 13 and 22, 2026. It carries a margin of error of ±2.18 percent. This makes it the most credible poll in Kenya.

In Mt Kenya, Ruto's former stronghold, 90 percent say Kenya is on wrong direction. In Nairobi, 89 percent. In Lower Eastern, 83 percent. In South Rift, 82 percent, per Nation Africa regional breakdown.

This is why there is no celebration today. How do you celebrate when 9 out of 10 people in Mt Kenya say you have failed?

PROMISES VS REALITY AT FOUR YEARS

When he was sworn in on September 13, 2022 at Kasarani, Ruto promised to be the hustler champion for boda boda riders, mama mboga and unemployed youth through Bottom-Up agenda.

He promised Hustler Fund cheap loans and lowering cost of living. But four years later, People Daily reports that 66% say they are worse off. This shows the Hustler Fund has not saved households.

According to Nation Africa's analysis of TIFA poll conducted June 13-22, 2026, even in Central Rift where Ruto gets 49% support, 53% still say they are worse off than before 2022. The fertilizer subsidy has not lowered unga prices. TIFA tracking shows 75% said worse off in May 2025, 70% in August 2025, 67% in November 2025 and still 66% in June 2026 - only 9% improvement in one year.

Bertelsmann Transformation Index 2026, a reputable international governance report, says Ruto inherited debt-laden economy and removed fuel and maize flour subsidies while adding new taxes to stabilize public finances, causing soaring prices. People Daily reports TIFA May 2026 found only 29% trust Ruto while 68% have little or no trust, net minus 39%. Citizen Digital reports 64% oppose his Broad-Based Government with Raila, with 37% saying it serves personal interests and 27% saying it weakens democracy by killing opposition.

RUTO'S 2027 NIGHTMARE

Another TIFA poll conducted between August 23 and September 3 among 2,024 adults, published by Citizen Digital yesterday September 12, shows 68 percent of Kenyans oppose Ruto's re-election in 2027. Only 32 percent support his re-election.

Citizen Digital reports: "More than half of Kenyans oppose President William Ruto's second term in office, according to a new Trends and Insights for Africa (TIFA) survey. The poll, conducted between August 23 and September 3 among 2,024 adults across all 47 counties, shows that only 32 per cent of Kenyans expect or support Ruto's re-election in 2027".

The Star newspaper reports Ruto leads with only 24 percent support in a fragmented field, followed by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna at 15 percent, Fred Matiang'i at 14 percent, Kalonzo at 13 percent and Gachagua at 7 percent. TIFA describes Sifuna as "a new magnet of electoral popularity". The 44-year-old Nairobi Senator has climbed from zero to 15 percent nationally in one year by tapping into anger over corruption and political violence.

And today, as Ruto marks four years in silence, Sifuna is doing what Ruto fears most - holding a mega rally.

According to AFP News Agency via Free Malaysia Today, a global reputable wire, heavy police deployment was witnessed during Kenya's opposition rally yesterday on September 13, 2026 as Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna and the Linda mwananchi team held their political rally at Jacaranda Grounds. AFP journalists at the scene confirmed hundreds of rowdy supporters already gathered at All Saints Cathedral as well as a large number of police maintaining perimeter. One church-goer told AFP: "I am a bit scared. It has caused a lot of chaos."

This is the picture of Ruto at Four - the president silent at State House while his main challenger fills Jacaranda.

WHAT STATE HOUSE DID INSTEAD OF CELEBRATION

Instead of anniversary party, what did Ruto do this week?

According to The Star, Ruto's activity was assenting to four Bills at State House on September 8, 2026. The Bills included Kenya National Council for Population and Development Bill, Air Passenger Service Charge Amendment Bill, Public Finance Management Bill and Trust Administration Bill.

He also hosted the 13th National and County Governments Coordination Summit where he outlined five priority areas to make devolution work.

On June 25, 2026 during first anniversary of Gen Z protests, Citizen Digital confirms Ruto was in Kilifi attending funeral of Mzee Gideon Mung'aro, father of Kilifi Governor, while Nairobi CBD was barricaded with razor wire and heavily armed officers sealing State House and Parliament.

The pattern is clear - when pressure is high, Ruto avoids Nairobi.

KENYANS REACT ON SOCIAL MEDIA

On X, hashtag #RutoAtFour is trending number 2 in Nairobi today. But it is not celebration, it is criticism.

One user wrote: "Ruto at Four, Kenyans at Zero. 76% say wrong track."

Another: "Four years of promises, four years of taxes."

Even Charlene Ruto, his daughter, has been trending for praising Raila Odinga for rare gesture at Devolution Conference, showing even family is distancing.

THE BIG PICTURE

As Ruto completes four years today, he faces a perfect storm: TIFA says 76 percent say wrong track, 66 percent say worse off, 68 percent oppose re-election, only 24 percent support him, and his main challenger Sifuna is holding a mega rally at Jacaranda with heavy police.

No wonder State House cancelled celebration. There is nothing to celebrate when your own pollster says you are failing.

The next 11 months to August 2027 General Election will be the toughest for Ruto. If Sifuna unites opposition, TIFA says Ruto's 24 percent could be defeated.

Yesterday September 13, 2026, Ruto at Four was marked not with ululations at Kasarani, but with silence at State House and police sirens at Jacaranda.
