Tim Wanyonyi tells Sifuna to strengthen Bungoma roots amid Nairobi political warning

Tim Wanyonyi has advised Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna to strengthen his political roots in Bungoma, warning that Nairobi politics is highly unpredictable and can shift rapidly.

Wanyonyi, who is intensifying his bid to succeed Ken Lusaka as Bungoma governor, said leaders must maintain strong local support even as they build national influence.

He argued that political survival in Kenya often depends on having a solid home base that remains loyal regardless of changing national dynamics.

“Nairobi politics changes with the seasons. Today people are with you, tomorrow the dynamics shift,” he said.

Wanyonyi suggested that politicians who focus too heavily on the capital risk losing relevance when political alliances and voter sentiment change.

He urged Sifuna to draw lessons from opposition leader Raila Odinga, who has maintained a strong political base in his home region while also building national influence.

“Raila remained grounded in his home region even as he became a national political figure. That is the kind of political foundation leaders should build,” he said.

Wanyonyi’s remarks come as political realignments continue to take shape ahead of the 2027 General Election, with leaders already positioning themselves for key races.

Sifuna, who serves as Nairobi Senator and ODM Secretary-General, has in recent years grown his national profile through outspoken political messaging and party leadership roles.

His visibility in national debates has also placed him among key opposition voices within the ODM party, especially on governance and electoral matters.

The Bungoma gubernatorial race is expected to attract intense competition as several leaders position themselves to succeed the outgoing governor.

Wanyonyi’s comments highlight the growing political activity in Western Kenya, where early succession politics are already reshaping alliances ahead of 2027.
