A section of young women drawn from Nairobi have strongly condemned the increasing cases of gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide across Kenya.
In a press briefing, the group under the Aganes Kagure Foundation expressed their deepest outrage and concern over the alarming trend that mainly targets women and girls.
‘’Every day, women in Kenya face the threat of violence, abuse, and even death at the hands of those who should protect them. We are losing sisters, mothers, and friends to senseless acts of brutality that have no place in a just and compassionate society. We are appalled by the normalization of violence against women and girls, and we refuse to accept it as a norm’’. reads part of the statement.
To this end, the young women’s group has called upon leaders policymakers, law enforcement agencies, and the community at large to take decisive action to end the GBV and homicide crisis. They also demand Justice for victims and ensure perpetrators are brought to book.
‘’ We demand stricter enforcement of laws and regulations, Increased support for survivors, a national awareness campaign on the crisis, and Investment in women’s empowerment programs across the country.’’
The Foundation noted that the persistent rise in GBV and femicide threatens to reverse progress in women’s empowerment.
It emphasized that the fear and trauma associated with violence create significant barriers for women to participate in social and economic life, undermining efforts to uplift communities.
