An ally of President William Ruto has turned down his appointment to serve on the newly established Nairobi Rivers Commission.
Millicent Omanga, who was named in the Gazette notice, expressed gratitude to the President for the trust shown in selecting her for the role but stated she would not be able to take up the position due to personal reasons.
“I’m deeply honored and grateful to H.E. @WilliamsRuto for the trust you’ve shown in appointing me to serve on the Nairobi Rivers Commission. It’s truly a privilege to be considered for such a vital role in improving our beloved Nairobi’s environment and public health,” she said.
“After careful consideration, I must respectfully decline the appointment due to personal reasons,” she added.
She reaffirmed his commitment to supporting efforts to restore Nairobi’s rivers and indicated her willingness to contribute in other capacities.
“I remain committed to supporting efforts aimed at restoring Nairobi’s rivers and stand ready to contribute in any capacity that aligns with my current commitments. Thank you once again for this honor and for the consideration,” she concluded.
In establishing the Nairobi Rivers Commission, President William Ruto emphasized the need for a coordinated approach to address the pollution and degradation of the Nairobi River Basin ecosystem, stating that the efforts so far had not been sufficient to regenerate the water systems to sustain aquatic life.
The President’s Gazette notice outlined the roles of the Commission, including the protection, restoration, rehabilitation, and beautification of the Nairobi Rivers and all water bodies within Nairobi City County through an integrated, basin-wide approach.
The Commission members named in the notice were to be chaired by Bishop Margaret Wanjiru (Hon.) , Dr. Mumo Musuva, Ms. Grace Senewa Mesopirr, John Kioli, and Ms. Eva Muhia.
Others are Amos Chege Mugo, Ms. Carlotta Dalago, Ms. Rael Chebichii Lelei, Benjamin Langwen, and Charles Karisa Dadu.
The Commission’s work will be central to reviving the Nairobi River Basin, with a focus on integrating efforts across different sectors to ensure sustainable environmental improvement in Nairobi.
