When Mombasa-based businesswoman Esther Mwende was rear-ended on Moi Avenue, she feared a drawn-out battle with her insurer. Instead, she opened her phone, uploaded photos of the damage, and received a claim decision in under 15 minutes.
“I thought it was a scam,” she laughed. “But it was real — the payout was in my account the next morning.”

Welcome to the future of insurance — one powered by artificial intelligence and automation.

The AI Revolution in Insurance Claims
Across Kenya and globally, insurers are rapidly adopting AI technologies to streamline claims processing, improve customer satisfaction, and detect fraud more efficiently.
Traditionally, filing a claim involved paperwork, long queues, and delays. Today, machine learning algorithms, image recognition, and data automation tools are transforming the experience from days or weeks to mere minutes.
According to industry experts, this is the biggest shift in claims processing in decades.

“AI is not replacing human beings — it’s freeing them to focus on complex cases,” said Dr. Kevin Wambua, head of product at Nairobi-based startup InsureAI.
“Simple claims can now be resolved automatically with remarkable accuracy.”
Who’s Leading in Kenya?
Several Kenyan insurers and insurtech firms are already applying AI in real-time.
- Britam Insurance is piloting an AI tool that analyzes car damage photos, estimates repair costs, and approves claims without human involvement.
- Turaco, a microinsurance provider, uses AI to verify hospital records instantly, ensuring faster processing of inpatient health claims.
- APA Insurance is experimenting with AI to analyze weather data and automate payouts for farmers affected by drought.
“We’ve reduced turnaround time for basic claims by over 70%,” confirmed Agnes Mwikali, Britam’s Head of Digital Claims.
“In an industry where trust is everything, speed makes a huge difference.”
Health, Travel, and Agriculture: All Going Digital
The application of AI is not limited to motor insurance. Health insurers are using chatbots and natural language processing to pre-authorize treatments. Travel insurers like Jubilee are experimenting with AI-driven systems that trigger payouts automatically when flights are delayed or cancelled.
In the agricultural sector, firms like Pula and Apollo Agriculture use satellite imagery and AI models to confirm crop failures — paying farmers without needing physical inspection.

Fighting Fraud in Real-Time
Insurance fraud remains a major challenge in Kenya, costing providers billions annually. But AI is becoming a frontline defense.
New fraud detection systems can flag suspicious claims patterns, cross-check ID records, and detect anomalies in user behavior — all in real time.
“AI doesn’t get tired. It doesn’t miss red flags,” said Irene Mungai, an AI ethics researcher at Strathmore University.
“But it must be carefully governed to avoid unfair biases.”
Opportunities and Cautions Ahead
While AI promises efficiency, experts caution that automation must not override fairness. Claims involving death, disability, or unusual circumstances still require human discretion and empathy.
The Insurance Regulatory Authority (IRA) is currently reviewing draft guidelines to oversee the use of AI in the sector.
“We welcome innovation,” said IRA Commissioner Godfrey Kiptum.
“But it must be transparent and customer-centered.”
The Bottom Line
From mobile-based health cover to AI-driven auto claims, Kenya’s insurance landscape is changing fast — and for the better.
Consumers want speed, reliability, and simplicity. If AI can deliver that — without compromising fairness — it could rebuild public trust in an industry long seen as complicated and inaccessible.
As Esther Mwende put it, “If all insurance worked like that, I’d never complain again”
