Police in Kijabe are intensifying efforts to apprehend three suspects who violently robbed a motorist at a bridge along Old Kijabe Road on Wednesday night.
The gang reportedly made away with Ksh 70,000, a Samsung Galaxy S22, and several credit cards during the brazen attack.
According to police, the incident occurred shortly before 11:00 p.m. when the suspects used a log to block the bridge. The victim, who was driving alone, stepped out of his vehicle to clear the obstruction, only to be ambushed by the gang armed with machetes and a metal pipe.
“The suspects threatened the victim with dire consequences if he failed to cooperate. Out of fear for his life, he surrendered his phone, wallet, and even revealed his M-Pesa PIN,” stated Lari Sub-County Police Commander Peter Kilonzo. The suspects promptly transferred Ksh 70,000 from the victim’s account before being interrupted by the headlights of an approaching vehicle.
Sensing an opportunity, the victim managed to escape and sought refuge at the nearby Rift Valley Academy. Security personnel at the institution quickly alerted the Kijabe Police Station. “Our officers responded promptly, ensuring the victim’s safety and escorting him back to his car,” confirmed Kijabe OCS Susan Wanjiru.
Despite an immediate search of the surrounding thickets, the suspects evaded capture. Authorities believe the gang may be connected to other recent incidents in the area and have expanded their investigation.
“We are pursuing all possible leads to ensure these perpetrators are brought to justice. We urge anyone with information to report to the nearest police station,” added Commander Kilonzo.
Residents of the area have expressed concern over the rising insecurity. “We are worried about our safety. This road has become a hotspot for crime,” said local resident Josephine Muthoni.
Police have assured the public of increased patrols and collaboration with local leaders to enhance security.
