In a statement released on Wednesday, November 4, Obama said the results reflected Americans' desire for political leaders who prioritise unity, practical solutions and public service over division.
The Democrats secured control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, dealing President Donald Trump's Republican Party a major electoral setback and changing the balance of power in Washington.
Reacting to the outcome, Obama said Americans had delivered a clear message about the kind of leadership they wanted.
“Tonight, the American people sent a clear message — they want a politics that brings people together rather than divides them, and leaders who offer concrete solutions to the challenges they face,” Obama said.
The former president credited the candidates who contested across different regions of the country, including areas traditionally considered difficult for Democrats to win.
“These results were only possible because outstanding candidates stepped forward in every region of the country — including in areas once considered long shots,” he stated.
Obama said the candidates represented different backgrounds and political perspectives but shared a commitment to public service and putting the interests of their constituents first.
“They came from different backgrounds and represented a range of political perspectives, but were united by shared values, a belief in public service, and a commitment to putting the people of their districts and states first,” he added.

Obama Sends Warning to Democrats After Election Victory
Despite celebrating the Democratic gains, Obama made it clear that the election victory should not be treated as an end in itself.
With Trump's administration having another two years in office, the former president challenged his political allies to use their newly acquired influence in Congress to push for changes.
“While this administration has another two years in office, our job now is to roll up our sleeves, make changes wherever we have the power to do so, prevent further damage, and lay the groundwork for the future,” he said.
His remarks placed emphasis on what Democrats do with their new congressional influence, particularly as they prepare to challenge the remaining legislative agenda of the Trump administration.
Control of both chambers gives Democrats greater authority over congressional proceedings, investigations and legislative priorities, although Trump retains presidential powers, including the ability to veto legislation.
Obama Recognises Election Officials After US Midterm Polls
The former president also took time to recognise the thousands of election officials and volunteers who helped oversee the November 3 elections.
He praised workers from both political parties for contributing to the electoral process and ensuring the smooth running of one of America's most important democratic exercises.
“We also owe a debt of gratitude to the thousands of election officials and volunteers from both parties who helped ensure a smooth election and carried out one of the most essential functions of our democracy,” Obama said.
The statement comes after Obama participated in Democratic campaigns ahead of the midterm elections, appearing alongside candidates and addressing voters in several parts of the country.
His latest remarks now shift attention to the political responsibility facing Democrats as they prepare to exercise their new influence in Washington.
