Acting Inspector General of the National Police Service, Gilbert Masengeli, issued a warning on August 7, 2024, regarding potential criminal activities planned to infiltrate the upcoming Nane Nane demonstrations.
During a press briefing at the NPS Headquarters in Nairobi, Mr. Masengeli, accompanied by Deputy IG of Kenya Police Mr. Eliud Lagat and DCI Mr. Mohamed I. Amin, emphasized the importance of public safety.
“We have deployed adequate security personnel, but we advise the public to exercise extra caution in crowded areas that might turn riotous,” he stated.
He also highlighted the need for compliance with the law, particularly concerning protected areas.
“Members of the public are cautioned against violating the Kenya Civil Aviation Act and Protected Areas Act by trespassing on protected areas such as Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and State House/Lodges,” Mr. Masengeli warned.
Addressing those intending to participate in the demonstrations, he urged them to adhere to legal requirements.
“Those planning to exercise their rights of participation in public demonstrations should comply with the attendant laws,” he added.
Masengeli concluded by commending the dedication of police officers.
“I appreciate all police officers, wherever they are serving our country and beyond, for their dedication to duty under very difficult conditions. I urge them to discharge their constitutional mandate devoid of fear or favor,” he stated.
