Mombasa’s Most Wanted Car Thief Finally Arrested After KSh 1.4 Million Heist

Steve Marvin Njagi, a man who has long been on the radar for his involvement in a string of car break-ins across Mombasa, was finally arraigned in court.

Njagi, who has been linked to several high-profile vehicle thefts, faced charges in the Mombasa Law Courts following his arrest by DCI Changamwe officers.

Njagi is alleged to have orchestrated a brazen theft on June 6, 2024, at the Naivas Likoni parking lot.

According to the charges, he broke into a Nissan X-Trail, registration number KDJ 505H, and made away with KSh 1.45 million in cash that had been left inside the vehicle.

The incident sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the growing problem of car break-ins in the area.

Police sources indicated that Njagi had been under surveillance for some time.

A senior detective from DCI Lang’ata, who spoke on condition of anonymity, revealed that Njagi was apprehended in Nairobi after weeks of intensive tracking.

“We had been following his movements closely,” the detective said. “He thought he could evade capture, but our teams were on high alert.”

Njagi was quickly transferred to Mombasa, where the DCI Changamwe officers took over the case.

His appearance in court marks a significant step in addressing the rising tide of car thefts in the region.

Motorists in Mombasa and other urban centers have been urged to take extra precautions.

Experts recommend installing anti-theft devices, parking in well-lit areas, and never leaving valuables in plain sight. These measures, they say, could make the difference between a secure vehicle and becoming the next victim of opportunistic thieves.

The DCI has reiterated its commitment to cracking down on car-related crimes, with a spokesperson stating,

“We will continue to pursue all individuals involved in these illegal activities. No one is above the law.”

Njagi’s arrest is seen as a major victory for law enforcement in Mombasa, and it is expected to lead to further investigations into his alleged network of criminal activities.

As the case unfolds, residents and vehicle owners alike are hopeful that this marks the beginning of the end for the notorious car theft syndicates that have plagued the city.
