Police Foil Kisii Crime Plot, Arrest Two Armed Suspects and Recover Firearm

Detectives in Kisii County have successfully arrested two armed suspects in a well-coordinated operation at Daraja Mbili Estate, preventing a suspected criminal act. The suspects, identified as Gerald Nyambarika Okumu and James Ochieng, both aged 35, were intercepted at Texas Petrol Station while riding a blue TV Star motorcycle (registration KMEK 866M).

A search led to the recovery of a loaded Bernardelli Model 60 pistol with five rounds of 7.65mm ammunition, concealed by James Ochieng. Detectives also found four improvised metal bars modified to fire and four mobile phones on Gerald Nyambarika Okumu, raising suspicions of their intent to commit armed robbery.

Police Praise Swift Action in Crime Prevention

Kisii County Police Commander Bernard Mbaya emphasized the importance of intelligence-led operations in combating crime.

“These arrests are proof that timely intelligence can help prevent crime before it happens. We urge residents to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities,” Mbaya stated.

A senior detective involved in the operation hinted at a possible wider criminal network.

“We are investigating whether these suspects are linked to other criminal activities in the region. We will ensure justice is served,” the officer said.

Kisii Residents Express Relief

The arrests have reassured local residents, who have recently voiced concerns over rising insecurity. Florence Atandi, a shop owner near the crime scene, commended the police.

“We have been on edge due to frequent criminal incidents. The police have done a great job by acting fast,” she remarked.

Meanwhile, human rights activist Patrick Ong’ondo urged the authorities to ensure due process.

“Let the law take its course. If they are guilty, they should face the full consequences to deter others from crime,” he said.

Investigation Ongoing, Public Urged to Report Crime

The suspects remain in police custody as detectives widen their investigation. The recovered firearm, ammunition, motorcycle, metal bars, and mobile phones have been secured as evidence.
