Kenya has made history on the world stage today.

Nairobi has been officially selected to host the 2029 World Athletics Championships. It will be the first time the event is held in Africa.

The announcement was made on Tuesday after the World Athletics Council meeting in Budapest.

Reuters confirmed the decision six hours ago. The global news agency reported that Nairobi beat other strong contenders.

World Athletics President Sebastian Coe spoke after the announcement. He said Nairobi presented a compelling and emotional bid.

Coe added that taking the championships to Africa will be historic. He described Kenya as one of the great athletics nations.

He noted that athletics is woven into the fabric of the country. Kenya has produced legends like Eliud Kipchoge and Faith Kipyegon.

The 2029 event will take place in September. This is in line with the 2027 edition scheduled for Beijing. Events will be held at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

The stadium is currently undergoing major renovations. The upgrades are being done ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Nairobi has proven experience in hosting world events.

The city successfully hosted the World Under-18 Championships in 2017. It brought together young athletes from across the world.

Four years later, it hosted the World Under-20 Championships in 2021. That event was praised for its organization despite Covid-19 challenges.

Nairobi had previously bid for the 2025 World Championships. That edition went to Tokyo in Japan.

The 2031 edition will be hosted by Munich in Germany. It will be held at the Olympic Stadium.

World Athletics said Germany has proved it is an outstanding host. Munich last hosted major athletics in 2009 in Berlin.

For Kenya, this win means more than just sports.

It is expected to boost tourism and create jobs. Hotels, transport and small businesses around Kasarani will benefit.

The government has welcomed the news. Sports officials say it shows confidence in Kenya's ability to host global events.

Athletics Kenya said the win will inspire young athletes. Many children dream of running in front of a home crowd.

Kenyans online have celebrated the announcement. Many said it is long overdue for the home of champions. The championships will bring over 200 countries to Nairobi. Over 2000 athletes are expected to compete.

Preparations will start immediately. World Athletics will work with the Kenyan government on logistics.
