BREAKING: Mpox Outbreak Reported in Lugari, Kakamega — Health Alert Issued

Chekalini, Kakamega County — Health officials have confirmed three cases of Mpox in Chekalini, Lugari Sub-County, triggering an emergency response and heightened surveillance by local health teams.

Kakamega Governor Fernandes Barasa announced the cases on Monday, stating that all three patients had recently traveled, and their movement is being reviewed as a possible source of infection. He assured the public that rapid response teams have been activated and containment measures are underway.

“We have activated emergency response teams to contain the situation and prevent further spread,” the governor said during a press briefing in Kakamega.

Health Advisory Issued

The county health department has advised residents to remain vigilant and report any unusual symptoms immediately. Key signs of Mpox infection include fever, skin rashes, swollen lymph nodes, headaches, and muscle pain.

Governor Barasa emphasized the importance of early medical attention and warned against self-diagnosis or delaying care. “Early detection is critical. If you notice any symptoms, especially after recent travel, visit the nearest health facility without delay,” he urged.

Containment Measures in Place

In response to the outbreak, the Kakamega County Department of Health has initiated several interventions. These include isolating confirmed patients, tracing individuals they may have come into contact with, sensitizing communities on symptoms and transmission risks, and strengthening local clinics to manage suspected cases.

Dr. Judith Mmbone, a senior public health officer in Lugari, confirmed that the affected individuals are currently stable and receiving care at designated isolation units.

What is Mpox?

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a viral illness that spreads through close physical contact, respiratory droplets, or contaminated materials such as bedding and clothing. While often self-limiting, the disease can lead to severe complications if untreated, particularly in children and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Public Urged to Stay Alert

Authorities are urging residents of Chekalini and surrounding areas to remain calm but cautious. Anyone experiencing symptoms or who may have had contact with a confirmed case should isolate immediately and report to a health facility for screening.
