John Kibera is one of the most famous grave robbers in Kenya’s history.He said that he loved robbing the dead as there were no police in graveyards.
Kibera now a reformed coffin thief, has confessed that he always stayed away from coffins containing remains of Kisiis,Luhyas,Luos and Bukusu.
Speaking to Standard DigitalKibera said that his experience was one that served him a lesson as his hands stuck on a coffin in Migori
“Mimi nanunua gazeti naangalia picha kubwa,sasa nasikia familia inakutana KiCC,Hilton Hotel.Sasa hiyo masaa mimi niko target,so lazima niwe kwenye hiyo mataka kazi yangu ni kunakili,sanduku ni ya pesa ngapi,Lakini sio Jaluo, sio Waluhya, Wakisii ama Wabukusu maiti zao hukuwa na kisirani” Kibera said
“Kuna siku nilihandwa na maiti huko Usenge ya Jaluo, unaenda kujaribu kutoa hiyo jeneza, unasikia unatetemekea kwa kaburi,jaluo hapana mimi nilikuwa nadeal na Kikuyu tu.”Which Way Nairobi, Azimio or Kenya Kwanza
Kibera said that he would also contribute 10 percent of the total value of the coffin before coming to steal it at night after the burial ceremony
Kibera made a name in the 90’s as the most wanted grave robber
He went on to narrate how some people are buried with money in their pockets “jamaa atolewe ndani ya kaburi,kwanza amulikwe amevaa nini, kuna matajiri wanakosea mtu amekufa Kiatu ngiri nane,suti ngiri mbao, chain ya dhahabu na kuna watu wengine wanazikwa na pesa kuna mtu mwingine alikufa na miaka sitini na saba na akazikwa na ngiri sitini na saba”
The now reformed pastor went on to disclose that they had a pastor who preached to the dead.
“Kitu ya kwanza baada ya kutoa huyo mtu,nilikuwa na pastor wangu ambaye alikufa,ambaye nilikuwa namwambia asomee huyo mtu Bible,maandiko Biblia inasema binadamu alikuja duniani bila kitu na atarudi mavumbini bila kitu,kwa hivyo tulikuwa tunamwambia sio kupenda kwetu lakini ni maandiko ndio yanasema hivo”
