It was a sigh of relief for presidential Aspirants after the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) agreed to extend the April, 28 deadline for naming running mates to May 16 2022.
In a statement to the press, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati said that they had decided to push the deadline for presenting presidential and governors running mates further after a consultative meeting with political parties and Independent candidates representatives.

“The Commission has today held a meeting with representatives from political parties and independent candidates to deliberate on the timelines for presenting the nominated Deputies for Presidential and County Governor elective posts.”
Following the consultative meeting with political parties and independent candidates, the timeline to submit list of persons for President and Deputy President candidates and Governor and Deputy Governor candidates to the Commission has been revised to 16 May 2022.”He said.
The commission however insisted that political parties should present the names of persons nominated to contest in other positions by April, 28 2012.

The great news came barely 24 hrs after Azimio-One Kenya Alliance dared to engage the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) in a court battle to contest the deadline.
Kenya Kwanza team however seemed cool and ready to name their presidential running mate.
While many had expected the running mate position to be a headache for both Kenya Kwanza and Azimio-One Kenya Alliance, the quest seems to be a source of problem of the latter than the former.
“We in Kenya Kwanza have no problem if the deadline to pick running mate is not extended. We are ready since our candidate has not been held hostage by other forces. He doesn’t need a committee to advice him on who he should pick” The Mathira law maker had said.
Azimio-One Kenya Alliance whose presidential candidate is Raila Odinga has been unable to decide on who should be the running mate and has so far convened a committee in a quest to find the most suitable candidate.
With expections so high that the running mate will hail from vote rich Mt Kenya region, suitable candidates are lining up to prove themselves worth and fit for the position.

In Azimio One Kenya Alliance, Narc party leader Martha Karua, Former Nairobi governor aspirant Peter Kenneth, Nakuru County Governor Lee Kinyanjui, Murang’a Women Representative Sabina Chege are named as qualified candidates from the region
However, their is still a section of leaders who think that a Raila-Kalonzo ticket would deliver the win with the Support of President Uhuru Kenyatta.
In Kenya Kwanza Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru, National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi, Mathira Member of Parliament Rigathi Gachagua and kithure Kindiki named as possible running mates.

Details have however leaked of a time when Deputy President William Ruto hinted of his preferred candidate for running mate position.
In his campaign trails in Tharaka Nithi County, Deputy president William Ruto hinted at his most likely running mate.
In his speech he courageously requested the people of Tharaka Nithi county to allow Professor Kithure Kindiki to work with him together with Musalia Mudavadi, Moses Wetangula, Rigathi Gachagua and Alice Wahome to form the next government.
In his Speech, the Deputy President exeded confidence that Kithure Kindiki was qualified, had the skills and experience to run national politics and help form the next government ahead of 2022 general elections.
In a past event also, Former thika Mp Alice Ng’ang’a had advocated for a Ruto – Kindiki ticket arguing that it was time for Kenyans to reward Tharaka Nithi residents for their overwhelming support in each election.
The second – term senator holds a PhD in International Law from the University of Pretoria, South Africa and has a track record of proficiency in his endeavours both in politics and administration making him a suitable candidate.
Whether it’s Kithure Kindiki for Ruto’s running mate or anybody else, that remains a mystery and hidden in deep secret among Kenya Kwanza Alliance principles and only time can reveal.
