In a decisive move to restore order and safety in Mombasa County, detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Headquarters, in collaboration with the Coast Region security team, arrested three members of the notorious Panga Boys gang in a high-stakes operation.
The gang has long terrorized residents in the Kiembeni and Kadzandani areas, carrying out armed robberies and assaults with crude weapons.
Targeted Security Sweep
The suspects, identified as Shaban Munga Ali (26), Sande Kalama Kitsao (24), and Shebani Charo Kalume (34), were apprehended during a day-long intelligence-led crackdown. According to DCI sources, the operation targeted hotspots known for gang activities, aiming to dismantle the gang’s network.
Shaban Munga and Sande Kalama were arrested at Mwatamba 2 stage in Kiembeni, while Shebani Charo was apprehended in Kadzandani.
“Charo was found in possession of a knife and two face masks, tools indicative of their criminal intentions,” revealed a senior detective involved in the operation.
Restoring Safety to Mombasa
Residents in the affected areas have long lived in fear of the Panga Boys, known for their violent tactics during robberies at business premises and attacks on pedestrians.
“This gang has disrupted our peace for years. Their arrest brings much-needed relief,” said Mwajuma Bakari, a shop owner in Kiembeni.
Coast Regional Police Commander Julius Ndegwa commended the operation’s success and reassured residents of continued efforts to eliminate organized crime in the region.
“We are committed to ensuring Mombasa becomes a haven for its residents and visitors. These arrests send a clear message to criminal elements,” he stated.
Evidence and Legal Action
The three suspects are currently being interrogated at DCI offices ahead of their arraignment in court. Preliminary investigations suggest they may be linked to a series of robberies reported over the past three months.
“The evidence collected so far paints a grim picture of their involvement in orchestrated criminal activities,” disclosed a detective.
Authorities have vowed to intensify their crackdown, urging the public to report any suspicious activities.
“Community collaboration is vital in combating crime. Together, we can uproot these gangs and restore peace,” emphasized Commander Ndegwa.
A Community on High Alert
The arrests have sparked hope among residents, but some remain cautious. “This is just the beginning. The authorities must ensure all members of the gang are brought to justice,” remarked Ali Hussein, a local activist.
The operation is ongoing, with detectives focusing on dismantling other criminal networks across Mombasa. As security agencies tighten their grip on lawlessness, the message is clear: crime will not be tolerated in Mombasa County.
