Government at a Crossroads: CS Muturi Criticizes Ruto’s Administration

Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi has broken his silence over the increasing abductions across Kenya. His bold statement calls for urgent government action to address what he describes as a serious failure of state responsibility.

“I have been quiet for some time, but many people have asked me where our country is heading. Today, I want to speak candidly,” Muturi began.

Having joined the Kenya Kwanza coalition on the premise of its commitment to justice and fairness, Muturi expressed his disappointment at the current state of affairs. “We vowed to end disappearances and extrajudicial killings, practices we condemned in previous regimes. Yet today, we find ourselves grappling with the very issues we swore to eradicate,” he said.

Muturi revealed a deeply personal experience that underscores the gravity of the crisis. His son was abducted last year, leaving his family in turmoil.

“I wasn’t sure whether he was alive or dead. It was a harrowing experience for me, my wife, and my family,” he disclosed.

Although his son was later released by unknown forces, Muturi said no charges were filed against him, nor was any explanation provided for his abduction. “This is not just about my family. It’s about countless others who are suffering in silence. The state cannot claim ignorance while abductions happen in full public view,” he asserted.

The issue of abductions has become a national crisis, with reports indicating a worrying rise in cases. Civil society groups have documented numerous incidents since June 2024, with many victims yet to be accounted for.

Muturi criticized recent statements by Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome, who claimed ignorance about the whereabouts of abductees.

“The IG’s remarks are unacceptable. The government cannot abdicate its responsibility to protect its citizens. Such statements only deepen the mistrust Kenyans have in their leaders,” Muturi said.

Speaking at a funeral in Embu on January 3, 2025, Muturi publicly challenged the government’s stance on the issue. “The government cannot continue to deny knowledge of these abductions. It is its duty to protect lives and ensure justice,” he said, emphasizing that the lack of accountability is eroding public confidence.

Muturi also questioned the lack of transparency from security forces. “Kenyans need answers. How many people have been abducted? How many are still missing? Where are they being held, and under what circumstances?” he demanded.

The Cabinet Secretary called for immediate action to address the crisis. “The security forces must arrest and prosecute those responsible for these abductions. All individuals held illegally must be released without delay,” he said.

Despite the risks of speaking out, Muturi stated that his position compels him to act. “I am fully aware of the doctrine of collective responsibility, but silence is no longer an option. If we do not address this issue now, we risk plunging our country into chaos and anarchy,” he warned.

Muturi’s statement has ignited national debate, with civil society groups and the public urging the government to take decisive action. Pressure is mounting on the administration to uphold the rule of law and ensure the safety of all citizens.

“As leaders, we are entrusted with protecting the lives and rights of Kenyans. We must act now to restore faith in our institutions and safeguard the future of this nation,” Muturi concluded.
