Nyandarua Senator John Methu has claimed that he was offered Sh10 million every week to establish a political party, recruit candidates and build a political profile that could eventually position him to become President William Ruto’s running mate in the 2027 General Election.

Methu, who serves as Secretary-General of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), said the alleged offer came shortly after the party’s victory in the Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election on July 16, 2026.

According to the senator, a government-linked individual invited him for a meeting over coffee, saying he had a message from another person concerning Methu’s political future.

“When we won the Ol Kalou by-election, immediately after, that was the 16th of July, immediately after, some person from government called me for a cup of coffee,” Methu said.

He explained that he accepted the invitation because he had a personal relationship with the individual.

“It's a person that is my friend, and I can't deny him because he's in government. So he called me for a cup of coffee,” he recounted.

Methu said the discussion initially involved congratulations over the Ol Kalou victory before shifting to a proposal that he establish an independent political vehicle separate from former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s DCP.

The senator’s account raises questions about alleged efforts to influence political alignments in the Mount Kenya region ahead of the 2027 elections. However, the identity of the person who allegedly made the approach has not been disclosed in the account.

John Methu Reveals Alleged Sh10 Million Weekly Offer Linked to Ruto

Methu Reveals Alleged Plan to Form New Political Party

Methu said the person who approached him argued that Gachagua might be unable to contest the presidency because of a court case, creating an opportunity for other leaders to expand their political influence.

“He told me, ‘Oh, hey, you guys did very well in Ol Kalou. I want to see you. I have a message from somebody.’ And I went,” the senator recalled.

According to Methu, the individual portrayed him as a potential successor to Gachagua in terms of political influence across the Mount Kenya region.

“Now, you have made yourself a name from Ol Kalou. The next person from Rigathi Gachagua is yourself. You cannot wait to be made king. You have to grab this thing, and we want to help you, how to grab it,” he quoted the individual as saying.

Methu claimed the proposed strategy involved separating him from Gachagua’s political outfit and giving him a party through which he could negotiate with other opposition leaders as an independent principal.

“The only other person apart from Rigathi Gachagua who can do a meeting anywhere in Mount Kenya and get general acceptability is yourself,” Methu said, recounting the alleged pitch.

“But you cannot grow when you're in Rigathi Gachagua's party. We want to get you a party.”

The senator said he questioned why he needed a separate political outfit when he was already serving in DCP leadership.

“I mean, as I was listening to that story, we want to get you a party, a party for what?” he recalled.

He said the response was that a new party would allow him to participate in opposition negotiations on an equal footing with Gachagua.

“So that you can have your own vehicle, and so that you can also get a way of participating as a principal in the united opposition. Rigathi Gachagua will come and participate as a principal, and you come and participate as a principal,” Methu quoted the individual as saying.

Sh10 Million Weekly Offer and Campaign Support

The senator alleged that the proposal went beyond establishing a party, with promises of financial assistance, rapid registration and support for recruiting aspirants.

Methu claimed he was told the party could be registered within a week.

“So I was told this party we'll register it very quickly. If you want it in a week, we'll get it for you,” he said.

He further alleged that the individual offered to provide initial funding before giving him Sh10 million every week to run the political outfit.

“Today, today, I'll give you money so that you can start off. Then we'll be giving you weekly ten million so that you can push your party,” Methu said.

The senator claimed the proposed arrangement also included helping the party attract candidates and obtain campaign materials.

“We'll also try and push so that you can get aspirants in your party. We'll get people who will be donating materials to your party throughout,” he recounted.

In another significant allegation, Methu claimed he was told that those behind the proposal would publicly oppose his party to make it appear to be a genuine opposition outfit.

“And then we'll be fighting your party so that you also look like an opposition person. You will not be working like we are together. We'll be fighting you throughout, and then we'll make you a factor, and we'll raise your profile, and we'll help you,” he said.

Methu alleged that the arrangement was presented as a trial strategy that could eventually bring him closer to the President’s camp.

“If this, because it's a pilot. If it works, we can converge at the tail end. You can become William Ruto's running mate,” he quoted the individual as saying.

The senator said he was astonished by the proposal.

“I could not believe my eyes. I could not believe my ears,” he said.

The alleged offer, including the proposed weekly payments and possible running-mate position, has not been independently verified. Methu did not identify the individual he says made the proposal in the account provided.

Why Methu Says He Rejected the Alleged Ruto Deal

Despite the alleged financial incentives and political promises, Methu said he had no intention of immediately pursuing the leadership of another political party.

He maintained that his focus was on defending his Nyandarua Senate seat in 2027.

“I told him, it's okay. I have no ambitions of being anything more than being senator in 2027. So therefore that offer is still bad,” Methu said.

He added that he believed he had sufficient time to develop his political career without pursuing the proposed arrangement.

“I mean, I have no intent of becoming a party leader now. I'm just 35 years, so I mean, I have a huge political life ahead,” he said.

Methu said he subsequently sought out Gachagua to inform him about the alleged approach.

“But when he told me that, I went and looked for Rigathi Gachagua. I told him the whole story. This is what I've been told. This is what I've been offered,” he recounted.

The senator said he also decided to inform Kiharu Member of Parliament Ndindi Nyoro, whom he described as a trusted friend.

What Ndindi Nyoro Allegedly Told Methu

Methu said he met Nyoro at Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi and explained the alleged proposal, including the plan to establish a separate political party.

“The next person I called was Ndindi Nyoro. I went and met Ndindi Nyoro at Safari Park. I told Ndindi Nyoro, these guys have offered me this, because it's a person that I trust. I mean, I was talking to him as a brother,” the senator said.

According to Methu, Nyoro warned that the formation of separate parties could weaken the political influence of leaders from the Mount Kenya region by splitting their support.

“He told me, ‘These people want to divide our votes. William Ruto fears a united Mount Kenya. William Ruto does not want us to be in one party, and we must all refrain,’” Methu recalled.

He said Nyoro urged leaders to resist efforts that could divide them into separate political formations ahead of the next General Election.

“Despite the fact that they will reach out to all of us, we must refrain from forming our parties, because if we form our parties, we are splitting our votes,” Methu quoted Nyoro as saying.

Methu also attributed to Nyoro the argument that a unified political party could give elected leaders from the region greater bargaining power, including when opposing government policies.

“William Ruto does not want members of parliament, a hundred from Mount Kenya, to be from one party, because if we are from one party, even if, in an unlikely event he was to win, he will not have his way,” he said, recounting the discussion.

He further quoted Nyoro as linking the region’s political alignment under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to its ability to challenge decisions made by the government.

“The reason why he moved to Gachagua is because all of us are in UDA. The reason why he passed the Finance Bill is because all of us are in UDA. If we had our own party, those things would not have happened,” Methu said.

These remarks represent Methu’s account of a private conversation and do not independently establish the motivations behind the alleged offer or the government’s political decisions.

Methu Says He Offered Nyoro a Senior DCP Position

Methu further revealed that he had discussed the possibility of Nyoro joining DCP and said he was prepared to make room for the Kiharu MP within the party’s leadership.

The senator argued that Nyoro’s parliamentary experience and previous involvement in discussions over the 2022 presidential running-mate position would have placed him in a senior role.

“I told him, ‘Actually, you are still senior to me. You are a second-term Member of Parliament. You are even participating in the running mate discussion in 2022,’” Methu said.

He claimed Nyoro would automatically become the party’s second-in-command if he joined.

“So if you come to a party, the pecking order will automatically change. You will be, of course, the automatic number two to Rigathi Gachagua,” he recalled telling him.

Methu said he was even willing to relinquish his position as Secretary-General to accommodate Nyoro.

“So even if I have to cede my position of being secretary general, I'll cede it so that we can accommodate you, so that all of us are walking in the same direction,” he said.

The senator described that discussion as the last conversation he had with Nyoro about the matter.

He added that he was subsequently surprised to hear Nyoro speak about having his own political party.

“So when I heard him say that he has a party, I could not believe my ears, because that is the only discussion that we had,” Methu said.

Alleged Political Deal Raises Questions Ahead of 2027

Methu’s account places political party formation and opposition unity at the centre of the political realignments ahead of the 2027 General Election.

His allegations suggest that the proposed party was intended to give him an independent political platform, with the alleged promise of financial backing and a possible future role in Ruto’s administration.

However, the account does not establish who authorised the alleged proposal, whether any money changed hands or whether the plan progressed beyond the conversation.

Although Ruto is named in the alleged promise of a possible running-mate position, Methu’s account does not establish that the President personally made or authorised the offer.

The Daily Whistle has not independently verified the allegations. Responses from the individual who allegedly approached Methu, the relevant government representatives and the other political figures mentioned would be necessary to establish their accounts of the events.

For now, Methu says his immediate political ambition remains focused on the Senate seat he currently holds.

“I have no ambitions of being anything more than being senator in 2027,” he said.
