The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has issued a public appeal for information that could lead to the arrest of Alfred Mbugua Gicheha, a key suspect in a high-profile wildlife trafficking case. A warrant of arrest was issued for Gicheha by the JKIA Senior Principal Magistrate’s Court after he failed to attend court hearings in December 2023, prompting serious concerns about his flight from justice.
“Justice must be served, and we are calling on the public to help us locate Gicheha and ensure he faces the full force of the law,” said a DCI spokesperson.
Background to the Arrest
The manhunt for Alfred Mbugua Gicheha began on May 24, 2023, when detectives from the DCI Serious Crime Unit intercepted a vehicle in Sipili, Laikipia West sub-county. Gicheha was driving the Nissan Vanette, registration number KCC 591B, when it was flagged for a routine search. In a shocking discovery, investigators found 23 pieces of game trophies in the vehicle, weighing approximately 110.5 kilograms with a street value of Sh. 11,050,000.
“This operation was a significant win in the fight against illegal wildlife trade. The evidence found was indisputable and revealed the scale of the suspect’s involvement in the illegal wildlife business,” said one of the lead detectives in the case.

The Court Case and Gicheha’s Absence
Following his arrest, Alfred Mbugua Gicheha was formally charged in the JKIA Senior Principal Magistrate’s Court on May 27, 2023, for dealing in endangered wildlife trophies. Despite the seriousness of the charges, Gicheha was granted a Sh. 3 million bond.

However, Gicheha has failed to attend subsequent court hearings since December 2023, prompting the court to issue a warrant of arrest. Authorities are now intensifying their search for him, as his disappearance jeopardizes the legal process.
“The case is straightforward, and there is no reason for the accused to evade his court obligations. We are doing everything we can to bring him to justice,” said a court official.
The Devastating Impact of Wildlife Crime
The arrest of Gicheha and his subsequent disappearance underscore the serious threat posed by illegal wildlife trafficking in Kenya. The trade in endangered species not only endangers wildlife populations but also harms the local environment and economy. Kenya, home to some of Africa’s most iconic species, has long been a target for illegal poaching and trafficking rings.
“Wildlife crime has far-reaching consequences, both for our ecosystems and our communities. If we fail to address it, we risk losing more of our precious wildlife forever,” said Dr. Emily Wambui, a leading conservation expert.
The illegal wildlife trade, especially the trafficking of animal trophies, has been linked to organized crime syndicates operating across national borders. Combating this crime requires coordinated efforts from law enforcement agencies, wildlife experts, and the public.
A Call for Public Assistance
The DCI is urging anyone with information about Alfred Mbugua Gicheha’s whereabouts to come forward. The authorities believe that the public can play a crucial role in locating the suspect and bringing him to justice.
“We need your help. If you know where Gicheha is, please share that information with us. No tip is too small, and all information will be treated with the utmost confidentiality,” the DCI spokesperson urged.
Information can be reported to the nearest police station, the DCI, or through anonymous channels that protect the identity of whistleblowers.
Why This Case Matters
This case is not just about one individual. It serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing battle against illegal wildlife trade in Kenya. Every piece of evidence, every arrest, and every conviction helps deter further wildlife crimes and sends a strong message that these offenses will not be tolerated.
“The protection of wildlife is not just a matter for the authorities; it is a collective responsibility. We all have a role to play in preserving our natural heritage for future generations,” Dr. Wambui added.

While Alfred Mbugua Gicheha remains at large, the DCI is determined to bring him back to face justice. The agency is continuing its efforts to locate the suspect and urges the public to assist in tracking him down. The fight against wildlife trafficking in Kenya is ongoing, and with the help of the public, authorities are confident that they can make strides in stopping this illegal activity.
As one investigator put it: “Justice is relentless. We will not stop until Gicheha is held accountable for his actions.”
